What is TRE® ?
TRE® (Tension, Stress and Trauma Releasing Exercises) is an empowering tool to assist the body in letting go of stress, tension, and trauma. Following a sequence of 7 simple exercises it assists the safe activation of a natural reflex mechanism of shaking, or vibrating, which helps to release deep muscular tension and calms the nervous system, allowing the body to return to a state of balance.
TRE® emerged out of the work of Dr. David Berceli when his observations and explorations of large communities of traumatised people in Africa and the Middle East led him to understand that this natural shaking/vibrating response appears to be the body’s own inbuilt system for quietening the brain and releasing muscular constrictions as a way of healing itself from chronic stress, tension and trauma.
Stresses and daily life – How can TRE® help us:
Every one of us experiences stress at different levels throughout our lives. Our bodies are not designed to manage chronic and ongoing stress in the ways we do.
It seems that today in our lives, stress, anxiety and trauma are commonplace, at home and or at work. We may not even recognise these levels of stress or how it affects us, until later on when pain, discomfort or illness arise. By practicing techniques like TRE®, we can prevent stress and tension levels from elevating to a point of chronic illness.
TRE® assists in regulating the autonomic nervous system, which in turn regulates many of our bodily functions, supporting digestion, sleep, energy levels and more.
If we can bring our nervous system into balance, we can bring our whole being into greater balance. A well regulated nervous system leads to a quieter mind, a clearer outlook on life and greater emotional resilience. TRE® is a practice for everyone and it’s a practice of personal self empowerment.
Our bodies are wise beyond belief and they carry with them the capacity to bring us to a greater place of healing and equanimity.
How does TRE® work with the body?
When we experience stress, and/or trauma the body releases adrenalin and cortisol as its natural reaction to the fight or flight response. If we continue to live with high levels of adrenalin and cortisol in response to continued stress, our body adapts into thinking those levels are normal and will maintain them there. This is the up regulation that so many experience. Our body just cannot sustain this , it’s like a light switch is continuously left on. Unfortunately, it will eventually burn out.
Here is where TRE® steps in. This technique will release a natural counter attack from the parasympathetic nervous system. The endorphins and other stress-reducing chemicals such as seratonin and dopamine counteract the up regulation by restoring the body’s hormones back to a natural or even balance. When this even balance is restored, a quality of life is restored.
What will happen in a session?
I will take a written case history, listening with care to the reasons for your visit. You will then be invited repeat the exercises after me which invite the tremors to come through. The last exercise is practiced lying on a yoga mat, fully clothed and it is here we allow the body to tremor and express what is needed in that session.
The first session will last for an hour and a quarter, subsequent sessions typically lasts an hour, although this can vary.
TRE® works with the natural rhythms of the body, shaking away stress and unwinding any buried tension patterns in the muscle tissue and fascia. Although the actual shaking is involuntary, the process itself can be controlled and paced with simple adjustments to the leg positions. The expression of the release is specific to the individual with clients experiencing the tremors in a variety of ways – for some it feels like trembling, whilst for others it is more like shivering or more internal, like a deep pulsing inside the body. The goal is to allow the body to tremor by itself.
Who is TRE suitable for?
TRE is suitable for anyone, adults and children over the age of 7. The exercises can be modified for any body type or ability.
How can children benefit from TRE?
Everyone can benefit from TRE, children included. I work with children over the age of 7, as well as working with their parent/s or caregiver/s. I have found that children respond to TRE very well.
As these neurogenic tremors/muscles shakes are a natural bodily response children are generally very much at ease with this work. The tremors relax the body allowing muscles to relax, in turn regulating the autonomic nervous system.

How may I feel during and after TRE?
The muscle tremors generated by TRE may feel different for everyone, perhaps they feel unusual, strange, or they may feel pleasant and soothing, with many people reporting feelings of peace and well-being.
The exercises are straight forwards and adaptable for all abilities.
Periodic practice can bring the body and mind into a more balanced state, helping us to become more resilient in dealing with the stresses of everyday life. It is a self care tool that you can access for the rest of your life to promote health and wellness on all levels.
